Basic Info
Name:kanda yuu.
Bio
The eldest son of three children born to a military family in Trivigno's capital of Basilicata, Kanda grew up with a fierce sense of justice and an even more vehement loyalty to his country as most boys of his time often did. The instinct for combat was ingrained into him almost as soon as he could walk, and his father, being a Lieutenant aboard the navy ship Glorious, was more than willing to indulge in his willingness to learn. These training and bonding sessions were few and far between however, seeing as how Trivigno's ambition often kept him at sea and away from his family. Determined still, Kanda often practiced his swordsmanship and marksmanship for hours a day, crafting himself to self-imposed perfection while waiting for the opportunity to again train under his father's wing.

It was a particularly hot summer day when a messenger arrived at his family's doorstep, an imperial gold-leafed scroll in hand. Elaborate and impersonal script read in his mother's shaking voice detailed the news of the Glorious enduring a brutal pirate attack while at sea. It was a valiantly won battle, but not without a heavy price paid. The loss of his father, while seemingly unaffecting the frigid boy who refused to shed a tear even at the funeral without a body, is something Kanda would never forget. His mother, a kindhearted woman who had never been very strong of health, fell into a reticent state, and passed soon after. Kanda, even at newly ten years of age, resented her for her weakness. With the death of his mother, Kanda too lost Arashi, his only sister and youngest sibling, to Trivigno's religious convent. He and his brother Oguna were then sent to live under the protection of their aunt at her estate just north of the capital in Maurizio. It was a little over a year of this arrangement before Kanda's strained relationship with his younger brother's disloyal ways to Trivigno spurred Oguna to abandon the country and flee to Mkweli. Kanda, incensed at the traitorous action to the country their father died for, vowed to completely disown Oguna as the same blood, and spent the next five years of life training for the single purpose of tracking Oguna down. Letters he received from Arashi for Oguna were promptly ripped to shreds and thrown away; he saw no reason to inform Arashi of someone who was "no longer their brother."

It was when Kanda was already hardened beyond his actual age of sixteen that he brashly left Trivigno for Mkweli with the intent of finally confronting his brother. The excursion ended in disaster; Kanda, still too inexperienced for even the "primitive" ways of the Mkweli people, ended up nearly killed in a village just outside the capital. From the blurry edges of death, Kanda only remembers the commanding prescence of a person in a wooden mask, looming over him in the dull light of a heady, strange smelling fire. His own feverish heartbeat was almost as loud in his ears as the rhythmic pounding of drums around him; whispers of magic and smoke and foreign tongues invaded his senses, igniting sweeping pain through his chest. That is the last thing he recalls of Mkweli. The rest is nothing but a dark blank in his mind, because the next time he awoke, he was being frantically carted onto one of the ships of the Trivigno-Mirande Trading Company bound for home, a clean and strangely crafted blade clutched in white-knuckled fingers. He was in bad shape, but alive.

Unbeknownst to him, Oguna, who was heavily embroiled in the culture of Mkweli and wearing a mask to hide his identity, spoke out for him and saved him from a certain death at the hands of the Mkweli natives. Taking Kanda to the revered shaman/priestesses of Thandiwe, they were able to save his life, though not without a price. Over his heart, a mark of voodoo was forever seared onto Kanda's skin in broad black strokes, granting him with the ability to heal at a superhuman speed. A blessing in a curse, once back in Trivigno, Kanda was quick to take advantage of the mark's strange abilities, but also prone to loathing the brand of his former weakness, hiding its prescence from the strict world that would most likely persecute him for it. Kanda is still unsure of the purpose and/or potential powers of the blade sent with him, and keeps it tightly bound and hidden. For reasons he can't discern, he is reluctant to get rid of it.

Shortly after turning eighteen, Kanda finally enlisted to become part of Trivigno's military. With the siblings divided and scattered, he saw no other way to support the country his father died to protect. He spent the next few months undergoing basic training, dead set on clawing his way to the top. His nasty albeit enigmatic attitude kept him free of most forms of "annoyances" save for one split second incident, which happened to be Kanda flinging open the mess hall door on his way to the barracks for the night, and watching it collide flush with the face of another soldier. He couldn't help but find grim amusement in the floundering teen on the floor, which was only quelled by the redhead's propensity to just not shut up about it. One offered handkerchief and shared bunk in the quietest corner of the barracks later, Kanda had somehow gotten himself a very permenant, very talkative fixture named Rabi (though he distinctly remembers not asking for his name) at his side.

After completing basic with flying colors, Kanda was eventually stationed alongside Rabi in Issoire, guarding the bustling port of Vernasca (really what amounted to guarding imports and exports of the Ladybird; a wholly boring job in Kanda's eyes) and acting as an attack dog slash security blanket for the easily ruffled Trivignian nobility, ready to move or be anywhere at a moment's notice. He has recently been assigned to the military vessel Glorious.

Kanda and D.Gray-man are property of Hoshino Katsura. I don't own either, I'm just borrowing the boy for fun.
